Ronald Leroy Nicewonger, 81, formerly of Altoona, passed away Monday in Charlotte, NC.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late William McGee and Anna (Miller) Nicewonger. On August 25, 1967, he married Sara Jane Wolfe in Winchester, VA. She preceded him in death on October 19, 2021.
Ronald is survived by a son, Robert Nicewonger and wife Bridget of Tyngsboro, MA and their children: Emily and Eliza; a daughter, Sherri (Nicewonger) Read and husband Nathaniel of Charlotte, NC and their children: Sarah and Thomas; and daughter-in-law, Lorie Nicewonger of Williamsburg and children: Garrett and Cole.
He was preceded in death by a son, Shawn Nicewonger.
Ron was a 1959 graduate of Altoona High School where he received the Joe Cohen Blanket Award for most valuable football player. He then attended Catawba College in Salisbury, NC on a football scholarship and was later inducted to the Football Hall of Fame. After more than 25 years of service as a letter carrier, he retired from the US Postal Service. He enjoyed following his favorite sports teams, bowling, fishing and spending time with his family and friends.
He enlisted in the US Army during the Vietnam War. He served March 18, 1964 until July 21, 1967, serving in the 1st Infantry Division, The Big Red One. He received two Purple Heart Awards for his valiant service.
Friends will be received from 10 until Noon on Thursday, April, 14, 2022 at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home, Inc., 719 N 4th Avenue, Altoona where a funeral service will be held at Noon with military honors. Interment will be made at Blair Memorial Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), 1000 Liberty Avenue, Room 1606, Pittsburgh, PA 15222.
