Robert Hughes

July 13, 1943 — November 27, 2022

Robert “Bob” Hughes, left us peacefully on Sunday, November 27, 2022, after a prolonged battle with dementia. He was born in Altoona.

One of nine, he was preceded in death by his mother, Alice (Kiser) Hughes; sisters, Darlene and Patty; brothers, Dick, Tom, Don and Gary. 

Surviving are brothers, Chuck and Denny. 

Bob had four daughters: Amy Hughes (Kate), Malia Hughes (Alex), Jocelyn McCracken (Justin) and Lori Hughes (Chris); and six grandchildren: Zoe, Nyah, Carter, Neva, Charlotte and Evelyn. 

Bob and most of his siblings attended Scotland School for Veterans Children in Scotland, Pa., where he graduated Class of ‘61 and then served in the U.S. Army Reserves.

He worked at Veeder Root Co. for more than 40 years until his retirement. Bob loved his work as groundskeeper for Altoona Curve baseball which he began in 1999. This remained his passion until he retired in 2012. 

Bob was full of charm and charisma. Those who knew him will remember his sense of humor, his wit, and his love for singing, music and sports. 

A Celebration of Life will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, 2022, at Juniata United Methodist Church, 808 N. Fourth St. Altoona.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Altoona Curve Charities supporting local youth programs.
