Michael Kenneth Winters, 69, Altoona, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday evening surrounded by his loved ones after a courageous battle with Pancreatic Cancer. He was born in Altoona, son of the late Kenneth and Geraldine (Hilty) Winters. He was twice married. First to Charleane (Lutz) Wood then to Diane (Laughlin) Winters in 1985. Diane preceded him in death on May 14, 2011. He is survived by three sons: Sean, Eric and wife Courtney, and Trevor Winters, all of Altoona; grandchildren: Erica, Madison, Brayden, Liam, Johnathan, Brock, and Mackenzie; a great granddaughter, Amira; a sister, Bonnie Hart of Philadelphia; four nieces: Pam, Robin, Jennifer, and Kristen; and great nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his girlfriend, Kandy Weidlich; a very dear friend, George Gardner; many friends from the Whistle Stop; and his first wife, Charleane, mother to Sean and Eric. Mike was a 1968 graduate of Altoona High School. He enlisted in the US Air Force in April of 1970 and served as a military police officer at Andrews Air Force Base until his discharge in April of 1974. He was then hired on with the former Penn Central, Conrail, and now Norfolk Southern in 1974. He started out in the track department, then transferred to the engine service as a fireman and was promoted to engine #1 in 1976 for over 30 years until his retirement in 2011. Mike was a lifetime member of the VFW Fort Apache, Cesar Battisti, The Bavarian Aid Society, and Buccinese. Mike was known for his diligent work on computers, making CD’s, and helping his friends with their computer problems. He was also known for his T-shirt collections and was a loyal Steelers fan. Friends will be received on Friday, October 2, 2020 from 4 until the 6 p.m. Memorial Service at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home, Inc., 719 N 4th Avenue, Juniata with military honors. A private family inurnment will take place at Alto Reste Park on Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Mike’s honor to the American Cancer Society, Pancreatic Research Foundation or to the Central PA Humane Society.
