Kenneth J. “Greenie” Greenwood, 96, of Altoona, passed away at his home surrounded by his family early Monday morning. He was born in Altoona, son of the late Alvin and Elizabeth (McElhinney) Greenwood. He married Lois Hamer in Altoona June 7, 1943. She preceded him in death April 4, 1983.
Surviving are his children: Deborah Lambert (Rick) of Antis Township, Pa, Patrick Greenwood (Brenda) of South Carolina, Robyn Kasun (Steve) of Altoona, and Michael Greenwood of Altoona; many grand, great-grand, and great-great grandchildren; as well as a close nephew Gerry Adams of state of Indiana. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Bonnie Spoolstra, his granddaughter Tammy Amrhein, and two sisters: Gertrude Adams and Rae Jean Gehret.
Kenneth retired as a Captain of the Altoona City Fire Department in 1973, after many years of service. He had also worked as a lineman for the Warner Cable Company for many years. He was a member of the Jaffa Shrine, the Logan Lodge # 490, F & AM of Pa, and a lifetime member of the Jaffa Provost Guard, the Jaffa Road Runners, of whom he was very proud to have transported many children over the years to the Shriner’s Hospitals in Philadelphia, Cincinnati, and Erie, the Scottish Rite, and the Tall Cedars of Lebanon.
Kenneth served in the U.S. Army during WW II, in the 343rd-86th Infantry Division, Company F, in both the European and Pacific Theatres.
Ken enjoyed hunting and fishing, including fishing trips to the Arctic watershed in Canada with his 2 sons and his friends, and especially spending time with his family.
Friends will be received from 2:00 PM until 6:00 PM Friday, July 5, 2019, at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home, Inc., where a funeral service will be held Saturday, July 6, at 11:00 AM. Interment at Grandview Cemetery. In lieu flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Family Hospice of Altoona.
