George W. Heaton

George W. Heaton, 87, Altoona, passed away Tuesday.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late George F. and Lillian P. (Kelly) Heaton.

On June 1, 1957, he married Phyllis R. Todd in New York State.

In addition to his wife Phyllis, of 67 years, he is survived by two daughters: Charlotte Douglas of Tampa, FL and Carolyn Miller (Michael) of Kennett Square, PA; a grandson, Alexander Miller; a sister, Linda Green of Bonita Springs, FL; and a brother, Harold Heaton of Ligonier, Indiana.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan E. Heaton.

George was a 1954 graduate of Altoona High School and attended many of the reunions. He was also a 1962 graduate of Penn State University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering. After graduation he worked for Raytheon in State College where he retired as a technical writer.

He served in the US Air Force from 1954 to 1957 where he was a fusing system technician and worked on the first operational hydrogen bomb.

He enjoyed shooting, reading Sci-Fi and ammunition reloading with his grandson.

Friends will be received from 5 to 8 pm on Monday, December 16, 2024 at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home, Inc., 719 N 4th Avenue, Altoona, 16602. Friends will also be received from 10 to the 11 am funeral service on Tuesday, December 17, at the funeral home. Interment will be made at Grandview Cemetery.
