Donald E. Carnell, Sr. January 6, 1919 -- January 29, 2009 Donald E. Carnell, Sr., 90, of Altoona, passed away on Thursday at the Allegheny Lutheran Home, Hollidaysburg. He was born in Altoona son of the late William Carnell and Helen Carnell Benner. He married Mary C. Misciagna on August 11, 1945. Mr. Carnell is survived by his wife: daughter, Donna Chamberlain of Altoona, and son, Donald Jr. and wife Dianne of Hollidaysburg. He is also survived by grandchildren Tanya McCormick and husband Kevin of Pinecroft, Scott Chamberlain of Boise, ID, and Donald Carnell III of Palmyra, and great grandchildren, Jordan and Trenton McCormick. He is also survived by step-grandchildren Thomas Jackson and wife Kris of Winter Garden, FL, Tracy Fischer and husband Shawn of PA Furnace, and step great-grandchildren Rayna and Reese Fischer. Mr Carnell was preceded in death by son-in-law, Thomas Chamberlain. He retired from the US Army in 1965 after 20 years service. He was a World War II Veteran having served with the 5th Army in North Africa, England and Italy earning 5 Battle Stars during his service. He also served as a member of the Marine Corps Reserve. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his family. He was also an avid motor sports enthusiast and loved to participate in car shows. Friends will be received from 1-4pm Sunday, February 1, 2009, at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home, Inc., Juniata. A funeral service will be held at 11am Monday at the funeral home with entombment at Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum with Military Honors. Don was a life member of the DAV; therefore the family is requesting that in lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory be made to the Disabled American Veterans.
