Donald M. Hoffman, 88, of Altoona, died Friday, May 29, 2009, at Ephrata manor, Ephrata, PA. He was born in Altoona, son of the late Frank and Sylvia (Anderson) Hoffman. He married Mary M. Clemens on January 16, 1943, in Sioux Falls, SD. She preceded him in death on December 30, 2000. Surviving are two children: Susan A. Pigott of Shelby, N.C., Barry L. Hoffman and his wife Jeanne of Ephrata, PA; four grandchildren: Christine S. Betman of Littleton, CO., Allison K. Ray of Portland, OR, David M. Hoffman of Princeton Junction, NJ., Derek M. Hoffman of Ephrata, PA; three great grandchildren: Tess Betman, Celia Ray, and Marissa Kopp; one sister Marie Turner of Courtland, OH, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded by a grandson Ryan M. Hoffman, and two sisters Cleo Etnier and Shirley Blanchard. Donald retired as a Lead Mechanic from Sylvania in 1982 after 24 years of service. He had previously worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad, and had served in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of Fourth Lutheran Church of Altoona, a member of the 339th Fighter Group Association, and a former member of the Masonic Lodge. He was a graduate of Altoona High School and went on to attend Albright College. He enjoyed railroad history, bird watching, gardening, and watching C-Span for current events. Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 PM Monday, June 1, 2009, at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home, Inc. (www.maukandyates.com). A funeral service will be held at 2 PM Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at the funeral home. Interment at Blair Memorial Park, Bellwood.
