Marian E. "Betsy" Ross, 81, of Homers Gap, died Wednesday at Altoona Hospital. She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late William M. and Linnie (Moyer) Ross. She is survived by her sister Maxine C. Ross, with whom she resided, two brothers: William "Dick" Ross and his wife Janet of New Port Ritchey, FL, and Ronald L. Yeager and his wife Sally of Grove City, PA, as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her sister, Wilma Jean Ross. She was a 1946 graduate of Altoona High School, and had gone to work for Hoffman's Sealtest Dairy for 8 years. She then went to college, graduating from Juniata College with a B.S.degree in Elementary Education in 1958 and from Penn State University with a Master of Education in 1962. Betsy retired after 27 years as a teacher with Altoona Area School District, and had also taught in the former Logan Township District and the Bristol Township District. She was a member of Homer's Gap Civic Association, and a lifetime member of PSEA and NEA. She also was a lifetime member of Asbury United Methodist Church, where she was active as an organist, Sunday school teacher, youth leader, and as past Treasurer and Financial Secretary. She enjoyed gardening, reading, playing the organ and accordion, her petsPenny and Buffi. Friends will be received from 4-8 PM today, Friday, June 5, 2009, and from 10-11 AM Saturday, June 6, at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home, Inc. (www.maukandyates.com). A funeral service will be held Saturday, 11AM with Linda Williams, officiating. Interment at Grandview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Asbury United Methodist Church or the Alzheimer's disease Research Center.
