William L. "Pegleg" Williams, 71, Altoona, passed away Tuesday at UPMC Presbyterian, Pittsburgh, after an extended illness. He went home to be with the Lord surrounded by his caring and loving family at his bedside. He was the son of Annie (Williams) Corle Wingard and was raised by his grandparents, Robert L. and Mabel F. Williams. He married Donna L. Geist on April 9, 1960. Surviving are his wife, Donna, "Ma," of 49 years; his mother of the Presbyterian Village at Hollidaysburg; five children: Vickie Cherry (Randy McClure), Ellen Williams, Robert Williams (wife Chris), Melissa Williams (Sheldon Bolinda) and Ted Williams (Randy Reese); two adopted sons: Jeff Cherry and Randy Reese; nine grandchildren: Danielle Williams, Tracy Settlemyer, Amy McClellan, Brandon McClure, Jennifer Cherry, Jessica Bennett, Brittany Billetdeaux, Joshua Williams and Kyle Ainsworth; and eight great-grandchildren: Brooke Cherry, Megan Settlemyer, Terry Settlemyer, Hayden Williams, Tyler Riley, Landon McClure, Colbie Kaye Billetdeaux and Alexia Bennett. Also surviving are nine siblings: Raymond Williams (Colleen), Harold Williams (Judy), Lee Williams (Jane), Ella Claybaugh (Eddie), Jerry Corle (Linda), Connie McMullen (Tim), Patricia Slone (Bill), Ronnie Corle (Patty) and John Wingard Jr. (Cindy); four sisters-in-law: Pauline Corle, Greta Corle, Rosie Williams and Grace Williams; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his grandparents; his stepfather, John Wingard; and four brothers: James Williams, Gary Corle, Walter Corle and Robert Williams. He worked at Penn Furniture, where he met his wife, Donna, of 49 years. He then worked at United Home Dressed Meats and drove a city bus. Bill then went to work for Stroehmann's Bakery, driving a tractor-trailer for 33 years. He retired from there in May 2000. Bill was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed spending time at his hunting camp. As a young man, he was an avid stock car racer, which he enjoyed with his brothers. He especially loved the high wall. Even though he always said, "I hate kids," he enjoyed the time spent with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed the company of his dog, Sade. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009, at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home Inc., Juniata (www .maukandyates.com), and from 1 to the 2 p.m. funeral service Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009, at Fourth Evangelical Lutheran Church, 231 Howard Ave., Altoona, Pastor Richard Barr officiating.
