Doris Jean Hoover, of Altoona, died Friday at the Lutheran Home at Hollidaysburg. She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Clarence and Helen (Wagner)Hoover. Surviving are three aunts: Phyllis Guyer of Altoona; Madeline Martin of Los Angeles, CA, and Thelma Roessing of Glendale, CA; three cousins: Terry Guyer, Rick Guyer, and Shelly McCaffrey, all of Altoona. Miss Hoover was a graduate of Altoona High School. She attended Penn State University for two years before transferring to Scarritt college in Nashville, TN, where she earned a B.A. in Religious Education. She later received an M.A. from Garrett Theological Seminary, Northwestern University, Evanston, IL., and also had taken elementary education courses at the University of Delaware in Newark, DE. From 1954-1971, Doris was the Director of Christian Education at Newark United Methodist Church. During this time, she also served for several years as Volunteer Director of Children's Work in the Peninsula Conference of the United Methodist Church. Miss Hoover was a Psychiatric Social Worker at the Delaware State Hospital, Wilmington, DE, from 1972 until her retirement in 1989. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Hollidaysburg, PA, where she was a member of the King's Daughters Sunday school class. She was previously a member of St. Mark's United Methodist church, Wilmington, DE, where she sang in the church choir for about 20 years before moving back to Altoona in 1993. Miss Hoover enjoyed reading, doing puzzles, and volunteer work. Friends will be received from 6-8 PM Monday, January 4, 2010, at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home, Inc. (www.maukandyates.com), and from 10-11 AM Tuesday, January 5, at the funeral home, with funeral service beginning at 11 AM, with Rev. Barry Neal and Rev. Jennifer Parks-Snyder, officiating. Interment at Grandview Cemetery.
