Eugene E. Ferguson, 84, of the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home, died Sunday afternoon at the Altoona Regional Health System, Altoona Hospital Campus. He was born in Hollidaysburg, a son of the late James and Genieve (Burke) Ferguson. Surviving is his life-long love, Betty Shaw of Greenwood, one daughter, Denise J. Summers and husband Steve, of Bel Air, Maryland, three grandchildren, Steven C. Summers, II, and his wife AdriAnn, of Sunderland, Maryland, Eugene E. Summers and his wife Amy of Glen Burnie, Maryland, Heather R. LeSueur and her husband Rehn of Minneapolis, MN, 12 great grandchildren, one brother, James Duncan Ferguson, two sisters, Marlene Focht and husband Ken, Carol Luther and husband David and many nieces and nephews. He retired from SKF, Altoona, where he was a machinist. Prior to that he worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad. He was an Army veteran of World War II having served from 1942-1946 in New Guinea, Southern Philippines and Luzon. His decorations included the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with 3 Bronze Stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star and the World War II Victory Medal. He was a member of the American Legion. He was a graduate of Altoona High School and attended the Pleasant Valley Assembly of God. Eugene played semi-pro baseball in the Blair County Twilight League and was a member of the 1951 County Champions. Friends will be received from 2-4 & 6-8pm Friday, January 29, 2010, at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home, Inc., (www.maukandyates.com), and from 10-11am Saturday at the Pleasant Valley Assembly of God, where a funeral service will be held at 11am Saturday with Rev. William Ferguson, officiating. Private interment will be at Blair Memorial Park, Bellwood. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
