Elizabeth Velma "Betty" Gauntner, 84, Garvey Manor Nursing Home, Hollidaysburg, formerly of Juniata, died Monday. She was born in Barnesboro, daughter of John and Sara (Allen) Ellis. She married Lester A. Gauntner May 9, 1942, in Winchester, Va., and he died Feb. 6, 2006. Surviving are four children: Fred and wife, Janet, and Lu Anne Beers and husband, Chuck, all of Altoona, Mary Miller of Saxton and Mark of Sterling, Va.; a son-in-law, John Stine of Altoona; nine grandchildren: Randy, Ryan, Rachel, Duane, Geri, Todd, Jay, Mike and Steve; four siblings: Howard, Melvin and Ben Ellis and Laura Zong; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Stine, in November 2009; a grandson, John Gauntner; and 11 siblings: Buck, Robert, Lloyd, Jim, Ken, Gene, Fred, Dave, Pauline, Maybelle and Barbara. Betty attended Altoona High School and retired as a hostess at Howard Johnson's. She was a lifelong member of Juniata United Methodist Church. She collected dolls and loved gardening and sewing, and she enjoyed winters in Florida. Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home Inc., Juniata (www.maukandyates.com), where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 15, 2010. Interment at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery.
