Alvera Mason

Alvera L. Mason, 82, Altoona, died Tuesday at Altoona Regional Health System, Altoona Hospital Campus. She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Leo G. and Verda (McCracken) Laich. Surviving are a daughter, Karen Barr and husband, Ken, of Altoona; a sister, Leta Veit and husband, Ken, of Altoona; a brother, Lynn Laich and wife, Marie, of Altoona; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Carl Laich; and a sister, Leora Lindberg. Alvera was a graduate of Altoona High School. She was employed as an executive secretary with the U.S. Civil Service, working for the Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Army. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and also belonged to the NRA and Lucky Ridge Camp. Alvera enjoyed playing cards, sewing and family get-togethers. Friends will be received from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, 2010, and 9 to the 10 a.m. funeral service Friday, Aug. 6, 2010, at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home Inc., Juniata (www.maukandyates.com), the Rev. Elizabeth Hess officiating. Interment at Grandview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church.
