Daniel M. "Neal" Vickers, 83, of Altoona died late Saturday night at Valley View Nursing Home. He was born in Greenwood, son of the late Daniel M. and Beatrix (Everett) Vickers. He married Gretchen Lippert on December 30, 1951, in Altoona. Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Gretchen; four children: Kathleen Vickers of Altoona, William Vickers and his wife, Barbara, of Altoona, Gretchen "Nadeen" Zartmann and her husband, Gerry, of Ballston Lake, N.Y., Eileen Wasylak and her husband, Stephen, of Altoona; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters: Delores Riggleman and her husband, Clair, of Martinsburg and Evelyn Cupp and her husband, Gerald, of Colorado; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his stepmother, Myrtle Oakman, whom he loved very much. He was a graduate of Altoona High School, and then served in the U.S. Army as a radar specialist during the Korean War. He retired from Conrail as a production control scheduler after more than 40 years of service. He was a member of Hillside Community Church in Bellwood and enjoyed softball, fishing, camping and bowling with the church leagues. He loved the Lord Jesus Christ and will be remembered as placing his Savior first in every aspect of his life. Friends will be received from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2011, at Hillside Community Church, Bellwood, where a memorial service will be held at 5 p.m., with Pastor Kenneth Beichler officiating. Interment at Logan Valley Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of Mauk & Yates Funeral Home Inc., (www.maukandyates.com). In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson's Foundation.
