Sylvia 'Cricket' Hinkel

August 21, 1927 — February 9, 2011

Sylvia "Cricket" Hinkel, 83, Altoona, died Wednesday at Altoona Regional Health System, Altoona Hospital Campus. She was born in Pinecroft, daughter of Don and Violet (Thompson) Cogan. She married John Hinkel on Sept. 11, 1948, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, and he died Aug. 14, 2008. Surviving are a daughter, Susan Laird of Altoona; four sisters: Charlotte Robinson, Donna Quarry and Larue Catherman, all of Altoona, and Roxanne Wertz of Pinecroft; two brothers: Don Cogan of Bellemead and Dale Cogan of Altoona; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters: Harriet Glasson in March 2000 and Gloria Weyandt; and a son-in-law: Ronald Laird in March 2001. Cricket was a 1946 graduate of Altoona High School and retired in 1957 from Sylvania as a mounting operator. She enjoyed watching ice skating and loved boating and going to her cottage. A funeral service will be private at the convenience of the family. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum.
