2d Lt. Barrett A. Snyder, 24, of Hollidaysburg, went home to be with the Lord early morning Monday, February 21, 2011, in Biloxi, Mississippi. He was born in Altoona, son of Donald G. and Sandra M. (Griffith) Snyder Jr. Surviving are his parents of Hollidaysburg; two brothers: Brian T. Snyder and his wife Bethany A., and their daughter Ellie of Laughlintown, PA; Benjamin J. Snyder of Boxborough, MA, one sister Hayley Snyder-a student at Slippery Rock University; his grandparents: grandmother Thelma Griffith of Ligonier, PA, and Donald, Sr. and Janet Snyder, of Hollidaysburg, as well as many uncles, aunts, and cousins. He was preceded by his grandfather Robert E. Griffith. He was a graduate of Hollidaysburg Area High School class of 2004 where he played varsity soccer. His senior year he was team captain, team MVP and 1st team MAC all star. He went on to graduate from Grove City College in 2008 with a BA in history. While at Grove City, he was a four year starter on Grove City soccer team, and during his senior year was team MVP and 2nd team all conference. Barry was involved in numerous missions projects - spent spring break each year working in Mississippi on Katrina relief or at homeless shelter in Memphis TN. In the summer of 2007, he played on Campus Crusade for Christ Athletes in Action soccer team Latin America tour reaching people with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He attended Grace Bible Church, Hollidaysburg, and was also active with Young Life and was a youth group leader locally. After graduating from college was employed at the office of his father Dr. Donald Snyder, substitute taught at Great Commission Schools, and was head women's soccer coach at Mt Aloysius College. He was avid Pittsburgh Penguin and Pittsburgh Steeler fan. October of 2009, he was accepted into the United States Air Force Officer Training School and began his training in November of 2010. He graduated from Officer Training School February 18, 2011 and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant. He was enroute to begin Intelligence School at Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo TX when his life ended tragically in a drowning accident. Friends will be received from 5-8 PM Monday, March 7, 2011, and from 10-11 AM Tuesday, March 8, at Grace Bible Church, Hollidaysburg, where a funeral service will be held at 11 AM, with Pastor Lou Hileman, officiating. Committal with military honors will be held at Alto Reste Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the 2d Lt. Barrett A. Snyder Memorial Scholarship fund, 515 26th Street, Altoona, PA 16602.
