Richard K. "Dick" Nelson, 84, Altoona, died Tuesday at his residence. He was born in New Enterprise, son of the late Jerome and Olive (Brumbaugh) Nelson. He married Lynette M. Shoemaker on June 1, 1949, at Grace Brethren Church, Juniata, and she died Aug. 7, 2009. Surviving are two daughters: Barbara Flynn and husband, Jim, of Allentown and Gloria Gmerek and husband, Mike, of West Chester, Ohio.; five grandchildren: Jeffrey Gmerek of Cincinnati, Brian Gmerek of Frederick, Md., Julie Ferro of Lansdale and Matthew and Michael Flynn of Allentown; a great-grandson, Logan Gmerek; and a brother, Robert in California. Dick was a graduate of Altoona High School. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He retired as a welder and carpenter from Conrail in 1998 after many years of service. He was a member of Grace Brethren Church. Dick was an avid bowler in the seniors' bowling league at Holiday Bowl, Altoona, and he loved to farm. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 3, 2011, at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home Inc., Juniata (www.maukandyates.com), and 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, March 4, 2011, at Grace Brethren Church, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m., Pastor Rod Lingenfelter officiating. Interment will be at Asbury Cemetery.
