John Millender, Sr., 66, of Altoona, formerly of Pittsburgh, PA and Alexandria, VA, died Saturday, March 19, 2011 at home. He was born December 17, 1944, in Wilsonville, Alabama, son of the late Howard and Lorise (Flambo) Millender. John is survived by his former wife, Phyllis C. Currie, two sons-John Millender, Jr., and Kenneth Millender, four grandchildren: John J. Millender, III, Christopher Millender, Michelle Millender, and Khala Millender, and one great grandson-John J. Millender, IV, all of Washinton, D.C. John was a graduate of Fifth Avenue High School in Pittsburgh, PA, where he excelled in basketball, and received a scholarship for basketball from California State College in Pennsylvania. Instead of pursuing his scholarship, he chose to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Air Force during the Viet Nam era. John served for four years in the Tactical Air Command at Keesler Air Force Base and was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant. Afterwhich, he became a U.S. Government employee at Quantico Military Base in Quantico, VA. John had an outstanding career as a bindery foreman for the U.S. Government. He was active in youth sports leagues in Alexandria, VA, for at least 15 years, leaving a positive impact on many young people, having coached basketball and football in the youth leagues for many years. He will be missed by those in Virginia, D.C., and Pittsburgh. Homecoming Memorial Service for John J.
