Charles F. Rutherford

Charles F. "Fred" Rutherford, 77, Altoona, died Wednesday afternoon at Altoona Regional Health System, Altoona Hospital Campus. He was born in Mill Creek, son of the late Eugene and Edna (Erwin) Rutherford. He married Margaret Henry on June 30, 1973, at Greenwood United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife; seven children: Margaret "Peggy" Stuckey and husband, Oscar, Melissa Servello (Mike Snyder), Donald Shaffer Jr. and wife, Louise, Tonya Whetstine and husband, Richard, and Brandon Rutherford, all of Altoona, Cheryl Simmers of Glasgow and Tonya Phillips and husband, Mark, of Indiana, Pa.; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters: Jeanette Gates and husband, Howard, of Altoona and Margaret Williams and husband, Glenn, of Tacoma, Wash.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers: James, William and Melvin. Fred was employed with Rhodes Painting Co. and James Ross Painting and then owned his own business for many years. He was a social member of the Newburg Fire Company since 1986, a life member of the Bavarian Aid Society and a member of Fort Apache VFW, Juniata, for many years. Fred enjoyed fishing and hunting and was an avid outdoorsman. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 17, 2011, at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home Inc., Juniata (www .maukandyates.com), where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 18, 2011. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family.
