Sarah Joan Conway

Sarah Joan Conway, 80, Altoona, passed away Sunday morning at Altoona Regional Health System, Altoona Hospital Campus. She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Robert and Catherine (Workman) Fix. Surviving are a daughter, Linda of Romney, W.Va.; a son, Paul R. (Joan) of Altoona; three grandchildren: Elizabeth Hooper (John) of Largo, Fla., Rebecca and fiance, Charley Reese, of Altoona and Paul A. (Alyssa) of Altoona; three great-grandchildren: Saara Alsayed and Miles and Lily Hooper, all of Largo, Fla.; and three sisters: Alice (Russell) Kensinger of Martinsburg, June (Jack) Smith of Lakemont and Kathy (David) Lynch of Lakemont. Sarah married Paul J. Conway on Nov. 13, 1948, in Cumberland, Md., and he preceded her in death on Jan. 27, 1992. Before his death, they enjoyed traveling to Florida and Myrtle Beach, among other destinations. She enjoyed traveling, being with her family, her cats, dinners with the Red Hat Society and spending her summers in her pool. Sarah was a member of the former Broad Avenue Presbyterian Church, where she had previously sung in the choir. She also participated in the Women's Fellowship Committee. She was involved with Altoona Community Theatre, working behind the scenes with the makeup crews for numerous musicals. In recent years, she had spent many hours working as a member of the office staff for Blair Dance Academy. Friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012, and 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012, at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home Inc., Juniata (www.maukandyates.com), followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. Thursday, the Rev. Dr. Robert Rupp officiating. Interment will be at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery.
