Edythe Kern

June 5, 1933 — January 16, 2012

Edythe (Long) Kern, 78, Newport, PA, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Monday, January 16, 2012, at Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill, PA. She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Fay and Violette (Gibson) Long. She married Doran Whitfield, who preceded her in death in 1973; she then marred Rev. Tom Lowther, who preceded her in death in 1986; then was married to Nevin Kern, who also preceded her in death in 2008. Surviving are two sons: Jeffrey Whitfield of Liverpool, Pa, and Stephan Whitfield and his wife Vonda of Newport, PA; 7 grandchildren: Marcus, Patrick, Trevor, Nichole, Deven, Stephanie, Shayna; one great grandson Tyler; 7 siblings: Jean Quiggle, D. Calvin Long, Lois Peterman, Nancy Thomas, Doris Steindel, Jerry Long, and was preceded by her brother Richard Long. Edythe retired as a secretary having served various insurance companies in Altoona over many years, and had previously been a houseparent for the Milton Hershey School. She was an Altoona High School graduate, class of 1951. She was a member of the Blessed Hope Bible Church in Liverpool, and was active in ministry over her life at a number of churches, serving as a gifted organist, pianist/choir director, Bible scholar/teacher, and had also taught children through Child Evangelism Fellowship for many years. She was a loving mother and grandmother, and will be greatly missed. A memorial service will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, January 28, 2012, at Blessed Hope Bible Church in Liverpool, PA. Interment at Asbury Cemetery, Altoona. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Perry/Juniata CEF, Box 168, Mifflintown, PA 17059.
