John E Shaffer

January 18, 1947 — March 15, 2012

John E. Shaffer, 65, a lifelong resident of Sinking Valley, died late Thursday at his residence. He was born in Altoona, son of Edgar Harry Shaffer and the late Martha (Hufford) Shaffer. He married Darlene Brosius on Feb. 24, 1990. Surviving are his wife and numerous cousins. John was a 1966 graduate of Altoona Area High School and served in the U.S. Army Reserve. He worked as a general repairman and owner of Shaffer's Building and General Repair. He was a lifelong member of Mount Olivet Lutheran Church in Sinking Valley, attending regularly and assisting with the services, and he was also a member of the Sinking Valley Volunteer Fire Company. John's proficiency in the building and mechanical trades was called on so many times by friends and neighbors. He gave unstintingly of his time wherever he was needed. A commonly heard comment was, "Call John. He can fix anything." He was constantly doing things for the well-being of his friends and neighbors. Friends will be received from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, March 29, 2012, at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home Inc., Juniata (www.maukandyates.com), followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. Thursday, the Revs. Cecil Lohr and Ray Brosius officiating. Interment will be at St. John's Cemetery, Sinking Valley. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mount Olivet Lutheran Church or Sinking Valley Volunteer Fire Company.
