James E Wyper

James E. "Jim" Wyper, 86, Altoona, died Monday at Altoona Regional. He was born in Altoona, son of Menus J. and Janet (Coleman) Wyper. He was twice married, first to Ann Louise Hake on Sept. 12, 1947, in Winchester, Va., and she passed away in October 1982. He then married Shirley M. Wyland on May 24, 1984, in Winchester, Va. Surviving are his wife; three children: Susan Dinsmore and husband, Franklin, of Martinsburg, James Charles Wyper and wife, Betsy, of Altoona and Mary Jane McCloskey and husband, Michael, of Altoona; three stepchildren: Amy Jo Baker and R. Patrick Baker, both of Altoona, and J. Michael Baker of Hummelstown; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two grandchildren: Jeremy and Caleb Wyper. James was a 1946 graduate of Altoona High School. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942-46 and 1950-51 and also served in the Naval Reserve. He had been employed with Acme Markets for 17 years, Altoona Hospital Security for 17 years and Mauk & Yates Funeral Home Inc. for five years. James was a member of Simpson-Temple United Parish and also belonged to Portage Lodge, F&AM, Juniata VFW, Bellwood Sportsmen's Association, Blair County Sportsmen's Club, Bavarian Aid Society, Jaffa Shrine and Tall Cedars of Lebanon and was a past captain of the Arab Patrol. He was a sportsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, Little League games with his grandsons and the television show "NCIS," and he especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He also loved his dogs, Mitzi and Gunner. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, 2012, at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home Inc., Juniata (www.maukandyates.com), where a Masonic service will be held. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 19, 2012, at the funeral home. Interment will be at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Simpson-Temple United Parish or Shriners Hospitals for Children, Office of Development, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.
