Samuel R Quay Sr.

Samuel Russell. Quay, 91 formerly of Altoona died at on May 21, 2012 at the United Zion Retirement Community in Lititz, PA. He was born April 6, 1921, in Mifflin, a son of the late Albert and Hattie Watts. He married the late Luella Merritt on June 27, 1942 at First Methodist Church, Juniata by the Rev. Herbert W. Glasgow. Russell was a Freight Conductor on the Middle Division of the Pennsylvania Railroad for 43 years, retiring in 1981. He served in the Marine Corps during WWII in Japan. Russell was a member of the Juniata First Methodist Church in Altoona where he had been a Lay Leader and a member of the choir. He was a member of the American Legion Post 745 and Juniata VFW. Russell enjoyed bowling, watching sports, reading and crossword puzzles. He was a graduate of the 1939 Class of Juniata Joint High School in Mifflintown . He was a member of the Greenwood Lions Club. He is survived by three children: Samuel R. Quay Jr. and his wife Sandy of Altoona, Sharon L. McCartney and her husband Joseph of Pittsburgh, and Sally A. Forsht and her husband Alfred Cromer of Lititz; seven grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews. Services will be held at the Mauk & Yates Funeral Home, Inc. on Thursday, May 24 at 11:00 a.m., with viewing preceeding the service at 10:00 a.m. and Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Juniata United Methodist Church, 808 North 4th St, Altoona, PA 16601 in memory of Samuel R. and Luella Quay, or the United Zion Retirement Home, 722 Furnace Hills Pike, Lititz, PA 17543.
