Mary V. Hoover Dec. 26, 1914 - Sept. 8, 2012 September 10, 2012 The Altoona Mirror Save | Mary V. Hoover, 97, Altoona, passed away Saturday evening at her home, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Kokomo, Ind., daughter of the late Lazzaro and Anna Michelena. She married Ralph D. Hoover in October of 1935 in Pennsylvania. Surviving are her son-in-law, David L. Carothers of Altoona; three grandchildren: Clint A. Carothers and wife, Tracy M., of Tyrone, Randy S. Carothers of Altoona and Cheryl A. Luciano and husband, Joseph J., of Altoona; 10 great-grandchildren: Danielle (Carothers) Hicks and husband, Andrew, Damian Grace, Heather Gibson, Nicolette Carothers, twins Jordan and Jaylyn Luciano, Aaron and Sydney Carothers and Zachary and Lindsay Mikula; three great-great-grandchildren: twins Ethan and Dylan Hicks and Alexander Mikula; two brothers: Frank and Gino Michelena of Johnstown; a sister, Eva Scaletta and husband, Charles, of Johnstown; and a niece, Theresa Sheesley of Johnstown. She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Brenda J. (Hoover) Carothers of Altoona; and a son, Darryl W. Hoover of Altoona. Mary was a homemaker and a cherished maternal figure in her family. She was a member of Wehnwood United Methodist Church and a longtime member of Grace United Methodist Church, Altoona. Mary loved crossword and word-find puzzles and music and was a wonderful cook. When younger, she loved taking long walks with friends and walking the babies in their strollers. Mary had a great sense of humor and a quick wit and was a blessing to anyone who met her. At the request of the deceased, there will be no public viewing or service. A private service will be held at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home Inc., Altoona, officiated by Pastor Bernie Bookhammer. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery, Altoona.
