Dorothy M. "Dot" (Garlick) Howard, 88, Altoona, died Saturday at Valley View Home. She was the daughter of the late William Raymond and Nellie (Bennett) Garlick. She married Truman "Doc" E. Howard on July 27, 1945, in Altoona, and he died in November 1975. She is survived by a son, John and wife, Carol, of Somerset; three daughters: Beverly Miller and husband, Donald, of Bear, Del., Jennifer Conrad and Melissa Howard, both of Altoona; two sisters: Shirley Eichelberger and her husband, Cleat, of Altoona and Elsie Huber and her husband, Joe, of Dover, Pa.; two brothers: John Thomas Garlick and his wife, Thelma, and C. Richard Garlick and his wife, Darlene, all of Altoona; a sister-in law, Betty Howard; a brother-in-law, Harry Weller of Somerset; five grandchildren: Todd Howard of Somerset, Christine Miller and husband, Sam Hofferbert, of Accord, N.Y., Dawn Miller and husband, Butch, in Delaware, Jessica Finochio and Crystal Conrad and fiance, Doug Loy, all of Hollidaysburg; five great-grandchildren: Cassandra, Ian and Zachery Howard, Nathan Gates and Jimmy Finochio; as well as many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters: Jane Harpster and Lyda Lucas; and five brothers: William, Raymond, Paul, C. Larry and Harry Garlick. She was a lifetime member of Christ Second Lutheran Church, Altoona. She worked as a house mother at Penn State Altoona, a cook at the Wehnwood Wissinger's and at Moran's Nursing Home and was a senior companion for Blair Senior Services. Dorothy attended Altoona Area schools. She was a loving and compassionate person. Her greatest joy was cooking and baking and taking care of her immediate family and close friends. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012, at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home Inc., where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2012, with Pastor Roger Howard officiating. Interment will be at Grandview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Blair Senior Services or the church of your choice.
