Miriam Elizabeth Smith, 97, Quakertown, formerly of Altoona and Johnstown, died Friday at her home. She was born in Johnstown, daughter of the late Lawrence Hiram and Elsie Mae (Buckey) Beam. She married Ivory Clarence Smith on March 18, 1935, and he preceded her in death. Surviving are three daughters: Shirley Ann Filer (Walter) of Altoona, Jacqueline Elizabeth Rok (Anthony) of Myersville, Md., and Connie Jo Hamick (John) of Richlandtown; a son, Donald Lee (Donna) of Altoona; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Sara Ruth Linscott of Hollidaysburg. She was preceded in death by a brother, Robert L. Beam. Miriam had worked in the cafeteria at White Oak Junior High School, Silver Spring, Md., in the 1960s and 1970s. She had also worked as a volunteer at the Altoona Center for the Mentally Disabled in the 1970s. She was a member of the former First United Methodist Church of Altoona, where she was involved in many church activities. Friends will be received from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014, at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home Inc., Juniata, followed by a funeral service at 1 p.m., the Rev. Brent Salsgiver officiating. Interment will be at Grandview Cemetery.
