William L. Singer, 89, of Altoona, went to be with the Lord, Thursday at his home following a brief illness. He was born in Altoona, a son of the late Clarence and Daisy (Pollen) Singer. He married Velma J. Kissell on November 5, 1943, in Altoona. Surviving is his wife of more than 70 years, one daughter, Barbara Rossman of Altoona, one son, William D. Singer and wife Dawn of Altoona, three grandsons, Todd Rossman and wife, Jami, Jason Davison and wife Tricia, William R. Singer, two great grandsons, Troy and Owen, one great granddaughter, Jesi, one sister, Delores Burley of Altoona, 7 nephews Barry Wayne and Lester Singer in North Carolina, Donnie Singer, Joel Singer, Paul Singer of Hollidaysburg, Charles Clayton Burley and Dick Singer of Altoona. He was preceded in death by granddaughter Nickole Rossman and five brothers, Clarence, Al, Joe, Don, Pete and one sister, Edna. He was a graduate of Altoona High School, Class of 1943 and attended Altoona Bible Church. Bill retired as a truck driver for Lafferty Trucking after more than 66 years service. Following that he worked for several years at Lynn Trucking Company in Altoona. He proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II in the 7th Beach Batallion and was involved in several major invasion campaigns including D-Day in Normandy and Iwo Jima and Okinowa in the Pacific Theatre. In later years he was interviewed by PBS Television recalling those experiences. He was a member of Park Hills Country Club where he enjoyed playing golf and cards. He loved spending time at his place on the beach in New Jersey. Bill was very proud of his converted motor home, the "Par Tee Bus", which he took on many family trips, golf trips and Penn State games. Friends will be received from 4-7pm Monday, February 24, 2014, and 10-11am Tuesday, at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home, Inc., Juniata., where a funeral service will be held at 11am Tuesday, with Rev. Stewart W. McClelland, officiating. Interment at Alto Reste Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Home Nursing Agency, Hospice.
