Carmen (Baker) Slep

February 3, 1924  --  June 5, 2016

 

                Carmen (Baker) Slep, 92, Juniata Springs, Altoona, went to be with the Lord Sunday, at UPMC-Altoona.  She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Ralph M. and Beulah (Emes) Baker.  After the war and all her schooling, she married J. Daniel Slep on June 30, 1947, at the First Baptist Church, Altoona by Rev. Carey S. Thomas and Rev. Eugene G. Slep.

They were the proud parents of three sons; Richie A. Slep (Susan), Daniel N. Slep (Kathy J.) and J. Bradley Slep (Suzanne).  Also surviving are four grandchildren; Christine Slep Inmon (Allen), Justin D. Slep (Ashley), Jeffrey A. Slep (Amber), Amy Slep Brady (Patrick) and seven great-grandchildren; Addison Inmon, Mason and Haylee Slep, twins; McKenna and Landon Slep, Sophia Slep and Logan Brady.

                She was preceded in death by her husband on January 10, 1998 and her brother, Jack Baker in 1979.

                Carmen graduated from Altoona High School in the 1941 Class.  She went on to graduate from Indiana State Teachers College (now IUP) in 1945.  She started her teaching career in the Old Antis Twp Primary Building in Bellwood and ended her teaching career in first grade at Juniata Gap (A.A.S.D.) in 1983.

                She was a life member of the N.E.A., P.S.E.A. and the Blair County Retired Group.

                She was a member of the former 1st Presbyterian Church, now Providence Presbyterian Church, Altoona where she played the piano at Sunday School and for the various departments.  Carmen came from a very musical family.

                She and her husband, Dan and families, enjoyed many summers in Westport, Ontario.  Fishing was a fun and relaxing pastime.  Humor was a must and Carmen insisted that all loved ones keep a positive attitude. 

                Carmen was an avid reader of the daily newspaper (The Mirror), also, the Upper Room and various Nutrition Books.

                One of her most important sayings was “A mothers heart is a child’s classroom, there is good in every child.”

                Friends will be received from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, June 8, 2016, at Mauk and Yates Funeral Home, Inc.  A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, June 9, 2016, at Providence Presbyterian Church, Altoona.  Interment at Grandview Cemetery.
