M. Madeline Maurer, 92, formerly of Juniata Gap, went to be with the Lord Monday evening at The Lutheran Home at Hollidaysburg.
She was born in Altoona, a daughter of the late W. Orris and Verna Ruth (Wilkins) Horton. On December 19, 1947, she married F. Kesler Maurer in Altoona. He preceded her in death on February 1, 1995.
Surviving are two granddaughters: Dawn Hillman (Matt) in Germany and Jill Maurer of Perkasie, PA; former daughter in law, Joline Maurer of Altoona; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by a son, Craig S. Maurer in 2007; a daughter, Janice Eileen Maurer in 1958; a brother. Norman “Buck” Horton; and two sisters: Anna Ruth Horton and Betty Louise Elders.
Following her graduation from high school, Madeline joined the U.S. Navy on September 21, 1944 serving two years during World War II. She served in Jacksonville, FL repairing bombers.
During her working years, she worked in the cafeteria at Juniata Gap Elementary School. She was a member of the PA Retired School Employees Association, AARP and the Juniata American Legion. She attended Calvary Baptist Church, Altoona.
Her faith in Jesus Christ was the strong link that got her through many of life’s trials and tragic circumstances.
Friends will be received Friday, December 30, 2016 from 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral service, at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home, Inc., 719 N 4th Avenue, Altoona, 16601, with Pastor Carl E. Wolfe, officiating. Interment at Grandview Cemetery.
